Hardwood flooring specialists in Knoxville

Our co-owner Nicholas Laskowski grew up in the flooring trade, and that background shows in how we approach wood: from picking the right material to the nails going in. Volunteer Flooring & Design supplies and installs solid and engineered hardwood, along with herringbone and other patterned layouts, for homes across Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville, and the surrounding counties.

Our own crew handles every step, including removal, subfloor prep, installation, and finishing. We are a member of the National Wood Flooring Association, and we carry Mohawk, Revwood, and other brands you can see at our showroom.

Solid or engineered, and how to choose

Both are real wood. The difference is how the board is built, and the right pick depends on your subfloor and what East Tennessee humidity does to it.

Solid hardwood - full-thickness boards, nailed down, and refinishable many times. Best over a wood subfloor on main and upper levels. More on our solid hardwood page.
Engineered hardwood - a real wood top layer on a stable core, so it reacts less to humidity. Often the better answer over slab or below grade. See our engineered hardwood page.

Species and stain colors

Oak is the workhorse in this region, valued for durability and how well it takes stain. Maple offers a cleaner, quieter grain, hickory brings strong character, and walnut adds depth for formal rooms.

Stains run from natural and light tones to deep browns. We show you sample boards in your own lighting, because a swatch under showroom bulbs rarely looks the same at home.

Installation and refinishing

Depending on your subfloor, we nail down, glue down, or float. Crawlspace homes, slabs, and basements each call for different methods, and we explain which one fits your house and why. Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions

Many residential installs finish in a few days, with prefinished wood going faster than site-finished. If we are also refinishing existing floors, we will give you a schedule up front.

Engineered hardwood is usually the safer answer in below-grade spaces and kitchens, since its core is more stable when humidity swings. We typically steer people away from solid wood in those spots. If moisture is a worry, our luxury vinyl plank is a waterproof option.

Solid hardwood can last generations with care and can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered floors last a long time too, but the wear layer limits how often they can be refinished.
